Measures
of central tendency
Mean:
Is the average of the numbers.
How to
calculate the Mean:
Add the numbers then divide it by the quantity
of numbers.
Example:
The mean of 5 , 3
5 + 3= 8
8
÷ 2
= 4
Median:
The middle number of a list of numbers.
How to calculate
the median:
Arrange the numbers in order from least to
highest and the middle number is the median.
Example:
The median of 4, 5, 8 , 9, 3
3, 4, 5, 8, 9.
The median is 5.
If the quantity of numbers is even, order them
from least to highest, take the two middle numbers, add them and then divide it
by 2.
Example:
1,4,2,6
1,2,4,6
2+4=6/2
The median is 3.
Mode:
is the value that
occurs most often.
How to calculate the mode
The mode is the number that is most repeated
Example:
1, 2, 6, 7, 6
6 is the mode.
If there are no repeats there is no mode.
Range:
is just the difference between the largest
and smallest values.
How to calculate the
range:
Substract the lowest value from the highest
value.
Example:
3, 9, 8, 7, 6
9 – 3 = 6
6 is the range.
